Dog-Eared Review – Metal Boxes: Trapped Outside

melanie_headshotBy Melanie Tighe –

Local author Alan Black has come up with a novel way to get his newest book, Metal Boxes: Trapped Outside, reviewed. METAL BOXES - TRAPPED OUTSIDE COMPLETEBlack actually put me in the book and made me a psychopath. The cool part is, even as a cold killer, I’m still one of the “good guys.” You gotta love that, right?

Metal Boxes:Trapped Outside is the sequel to Black’s best-selling Metal Boxes, a riveting space adventure that channels Heinlein’s classic stories but with Black’s original and updated voice make for a great read. As always, Black has created some of the most interesting characters in the universe, and he doesn’t cut them any slack at all.

Alan Black’s books are available on Amazon, but you can pick up signed copies at Dog-Eared Pages.

I’ve been a fan of local and bestselling sci-fi writer Alan Black for years, and his newest release, Empty Space, doesn’t disappoint. I think the best way to describe this novel would be Dexter meets Deep Space Nine. I found myself rooting for Black’s well-written character, York Sixteen, all the way through the story, despite his chilling psychological flaws.

Things really get interesting when York is stationed on  the loneliest space station in Republic Space. Where does a judicious serial killer find his victims, when there’s no one around who deserves his special brand of justice?

Signed copies of Empty Space are available at Dog-Eared Pages bookstore in Phoenix.

Dog-Eared Review: The Friendship Stones

Tired of today’s rushing, crushing pace? Slow down and take a trip back to a simpler time with The Friendship Stones by Arizona authors Alan Black and Bernice Knight.friendship-stones

Twelve year old, Lillibeth believes it to be her ‘Christian duty’ to befriend her mean, miserly neighbor; a man, no one else in the county will have anything to do with. At a time of prohibition, moonshine and misfortune follow, and lead to an unexpected alliance that sweeps friendships and promises down new paths and opens a new world to Lillibeth.

I was intrigued to see Black’s name on The Friendship Stones. At first glance, this book would qualify as a perfect opposite to science fiction, yet Black is a well-known sci-fi writer. Once I learned he’d teamed up with his mother, Knight to help tell a story she’d always wanted to write, my curiosity got the better of me. I’ve not read much recent American historical fiction, but maybe it is time we get to know what growing up must have been like for our parents and grandparents.

Imagine my surprise to find, daily life in the poverty-stricken Ozarks, is as different from today’s “normal,” as to be almost as alien as any of Alan’s other worlds.

Signed copies of The Friendship Stones are available at Dog-Eared Pages.
