Tucson Folk Festival Kicks Off April 30

The 31st annual Tucson Folk Festival, one of the oldest free folk music festivals in the country, will unfold the weekend of Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1.  More than 120 performing artists from Southern Arizona and across the country will bring their musical talent to five different stages for a celebration of acoustical music.  The festival brings more than 10,000 fans and participants who come from all over southern Arizona, and across the nation to support the American folk music traditions and all the wonderful variations, including American Bluegrass, Blues, Country, Jazz, Celtic, Zydeco and various styles of Latin and Mexican music. This festival takes place in some of the most historic locations in Downtown Tucson: El Presidio Park, the Old Pima County Courthouse, the Tucson Museum of Art and LaCocina/Old Town Artisans.

Folk music singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John McCutcheon will headline the festival on Saturday night.  Special guest, James Reams, widely known as an “Ambassador of Bluegrass” for his dedication to bluegrass and old time music, will also perform with his band, the Barnstormers.  Tucson favorite Nancy McCallion will top off the weekend on Sunday evening with her, “American roots music with a twist of soul and a dram of blarney,” accompanied by The Scarlet Lettermen.   Tucson’s own Heather Hardy and a few other special guests will also be joining McCallion’s performance.

Listen to songwriting finalists perform their songs at the Stefan George Songwriting Competition.  Bring instruments to participate in workshops for guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and songwriting.  Join the “Ballad Tree” to share songs.  Come to a special Children’s Show on Sunday.  Many different kinds of food will be available for purchase.  Artists and crafts persons will show and sell their creations.  The TKMA Kitchen Store will again feature this year’s Tucson Folk Festival T-Shirt, performers’ CD’s, along with, TKMA mugs and hats for sale.  Raffles opportunities include: Jim Click’s Millions For Tucson 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT-350; Two Breedlove Discovery Concert Acoustic Guitars ($399 value each) donated by Instrumental Music Center; CD Collection of Individual Festival Performers; Tucson Folk Festival Quilt and 50/50 Raffle.

The event is produced by Tucson Kitchen Musicians Association, an all volunteer-run 501(c)3 non-profit organization established to further public awareness and interest in acoustical music and other folk arts by promoting and producing the annual Tucson Folk Festival.
