Investing In Planet Earth

grass planetFive ways to keep on the green side

By Kathryn M. Miller ~ No matter which side of the climate change/global warming debate one falls on, it cannot be denied that planet Earth is home, and as any conscientious homeowner will tell you, upkeep and pride of ownership are key to maintaining value.

Earth Day is April 22, and the perfect opportunity to reflect on how we are treating ol’ Mother Earth, and perhaps consider investing in her health. Here are five ways to ditch the debate and just keep on the “green side.”

  1. Do Some Spring Cleaning: But don’t fill the dumpster! Donate gently used items to area charities such as Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul, or find a boutique consignment shop for higher-end items. A one-stop-recycling-stop, I Recycle Phoenix takes place May 2. Open to all residents, they will be able to recycle just about anything. Visit www.recyclecleanphoenix.org.
  2. Recycle Landscaping Waste: Check out the City of Phoenix Green Organics Curbside Collection Program (www.phoenix.gov/publicworks/recycling) – perfect for households that have weekly landscaping maintenance and/or own large properties. Phase I includes a good portion of the North Phoenix area. Phase II has been approved and will expand the service area.
  3. Cut Down On Unsolicited Mail: Opt out at www.optoutprescreen.com at www.dmachoice.org.
  4. Dig Into Composting: Home cooks and gardeners may find composting a wise investment. The City of Phoenix offers composting bins for $5 (call 602.262.7251). The City of Scottsdale provides tips to get started at www.scottsdaleaz.gov/recycle/compostinginfo. DIY not your thing? Recycled City, LLC will pick up food waste and turn it into compost gold for residents and businesses alike. Visit www.recycledcity.com or call 480.269.5149.
  5. Get Educated & Involved: Earth Day Phoenix 2015 (www.earthdayphoenix.org) will be held at PHX Renews (www.phxrenews.org) April 25 from 11am-5pm. PHX Renews was implemented by Keep Phoenix Beautiful and works on projects throughout the year. Learn more at www.keepphxbeautiful.org. |CST
