David Schwan Resigns As Mayor of Carefree

{A7388B7E-841E-4E38-92F2-90C7B14A2BE5}After 12 years of serving the Town of Carefree, David Schwan resigned as mayor, effective 12pm, February 4. The resignation comes on the heels of his receiving a diagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

“At present I am having increasing difficulty in fulfilling the duties and obligations of the Office of Mayor,” Schwan wrote in a letter to Carefree citizens and Town staff. “I will not be able to meet these commitments in the future. My wife, Binka, and I will be devoting all of our time and energy addressing the consequences of ALS.”

His letter went on to thank the staff of the Town of Carefree, The Carefree Water Company and the Carefree-Cave Creek Consolidated Court for their “diligent service” during his time as mayor, as well as the citizens of Carefree. Schwan served the Town on committees and as a member of the Town Council. He was appointed mayor by the Town Council in 2009, and was the first citizen elected as mayor in 2011.

Schwan has also served the North Valley community in numerous volunteer capacities: as a member of the President’s Circle of the Paradise Valley Community College, by working with the Voices of Youth program at Cactus Shadows High School, representing Carefree at the Northeast Valley Coalition Against Methamphetamine and as a volunteer with the Foothills Caring Corps.

There has been an outpouring of support from Carefree and surrounding communities upon hearing the news of Schwan’s health issues and subsequent resignation. Those who would like to send Schwan and his wife good wishes may mail correspondence to PO Box 5984, Carefree, AZ 85377.
