In our hearts, all of us want to make a difference. We think of ourselves as compassionate people. After all, have you ever met a truly happy self-centered person? However, we see the sobering statistics about hunger in the world and can easily become discouraged.

According to recent statistics provided by UNICEF, 6,200 people die each day due to hunger. The good news is that we have made considerable progress. The previous report revealed that 18,000 children die daily due to hunger. We are making progress…but 6,200 is 6,200 too many. The world produces enough food to feed everyone with almost 3,000 calories a day. The problem is distribution.

In one of Jesus’ most pointed parables, he says that if you really love God, then you will also have a heart for feeding the hungry. He even says that when we share with those in need, it like we are serving Jesus. In the book of James, he reminds us that genuine faith produces tangible acts of good. God cares about the hungry and calls those who love him to care and to act. There is nothing more inspiring and satisfying than serving and really making a difference.

Many people have discovered an organization called Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). FMSC has developed a meal to meet the nutritional needs of a malnourished child that costs about 22 cents each – that’s right, 22 cents. Individuals, churches, foundations and corporations donate the resources for the food. Groups of people volunteer to serve at a packing site like the one in Tempe. The participation in this Tempe packing site has been so tremendous that FMSC is strongly considering expanding to another location in the Valley. There is a job for every one – some people add rice, others add soy, others add veggies and still others weigh and seal the meal packs. The packing process is like a big party. Teams come up with creative cheers, everyone is singing to the music and some are even dancing. FMSC recently sponsored a huge packing party at the Phoenix Civic Center where volunteers packed more than a million meals in 24 hours. Please, check it out for yourself or for your church or office at

The food goes to about 70 different countries in the world, including Haiti, Philippines, Bangladesh, Uganda and even the USA. Of the 600 million meals shipped, 99.96 percent have reached their destination. FMSC has received the highest four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the toughest charity watch-dog.

None of us can solve the whole problem, but we can answer God’s call to us…one person at a time…one meal at a time. How about you?
