Center Offers Family Grief Support

New Song Center for Grieving Children offers grief support groups for families who have experienced the death of a loved one. A program of not-for-profit Hospice of the Valley, the no-cost program helps children, teens and young adults cope with loss through the sharing of stories and experiences, as well as art, dance, music and recreation. Adults attend their own support groups, where they learn how to help children and teen process grief in a healthy manner while learning how to cope with loss themselves.

Earlier this year, New Song kids at the Scottsdale location turned white heart-shaped pillows into colorful canvases to help express their feelings. Skylar Patrick, six, chose a hummingbird scene because she believes her brother, who died last year, sends the birds to her now.

“Every project she has done with New Song has been very impactful,’’ says Skylar’s mother, Lori Patrick.

Support groups in Scottsdale are held at Episcopal Parish of Saint Barnabas on the Desert, 6716 North Mockingbird Lane. For enrollment information, call 480.951.8985 or visit www.hov.org.
