Rock The District Fundraiser

Local students compete to perform in concert

By Jessica Lauridsen ~ Get ready to support great local talent this month at the Fourth Annual Rock the District (RTD) fundraiser on Saturday, November 17 at 5pm at el Pedregal. RTD is an evening of live performance by local students in grades six-12, emceed by local DJ Mathew Blades from radio 96.9. The event is put on by parents of the Cave Creek Unified Education Fund (CCUEF) and students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Cactus Shadows High School, allowing members of IB to fulfill community service and leadership hours.

“CCUEF is proud to be affiliated with Rock the District,” says CCUEF Vice President Casey Hargett. “We enjoy getting to work with so many talented and responsible young people in our community.”

Local student Melissa Nelson is the founder of Cave Creek Unified School District’s annual fundraiser. She’s a senior at Cactus Shadows High School with ambition that has earned her a long list of accomplishments. Nelson has performed with local theaters and won several vocal competitions. In 2008, she attended a leadership conference where the aspiring singer/songwriter was challenged to benefit her community. She chose raising money through a concert. With the help of her mother, Rock the District was born and has become a yearly event put on for students – by students.

In her last year as a participant, Nelson says, “I hope to see the number of Rock the District attendees increase every year because it’s such a great way to bring the community together in support of musical education.”
