Get Out! July Is National Park and Recreation Month

By Kathryn M. Miller – Arizona has one of the highest percentages of public land in the United Sates – nearly 54 percent. Maricopa County is home to one of the largest regional parks systems in the nation with over 120,000 acres of open space parks that include hundreds of miles of trails, campgrounds and nature centers.

The City of Phoenix alone has over 30,000 acres of Desert/Mountain Preserves, over 7,000 acres of Desert Parks and nearly 5,000 acres of developed City Parks. In fact, Phoenix is home to the world’s largest desert municipal park: South Mountain Park Preserve. Named one of National Geographic’s best hiking cities, Phoenix boasts dozens of trail access points throughout the city, making it easy to make time for a hike, run or ride; with a trail for everyone, from arduous summit climbs to meandering valley walks.

All of this room to roam is being celebrated nationally this month during Park and Recreation Month, and the national “Get Wild in July” campaign is in full swing. (The City of Scottsdale has dedicated events: http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/parks.)

Whether its museums, hiking, golfing, swimming or just getting out and enjoying our beautiful city, county and state parks, there are a lot of ways to get out and get a little wild this summer.
