YWCA Honors Local Leaders

On March 10, YWCA Maricopa County celebrated its first evening gala, Tribute to Leadership.  Nine outstanding community leaders whose life work exemplifies the YWCA’s mission: eliminating discrimination and empowering women – were honored.

“It is an honor to be able to celebrate such exceptional women,” says Dana Campbell Saylor, CEO of YWCA Maricopa County.  “They have truly made incredible contributions to our community as well as extended their hearts through their passion and commitment.”

The 2012 Leadership Awards were given to Jodi Liggett, Advocacy; Sue Glawe, Corporate Community Service; Darlene Newsom, Nonprofit Community Service; Karen Callahan, Education; Eddie Sissons, Health & Science; LTC, USAR (Ret) Carol Jeannine Dahl, Military & Armed Service; Diane Enos, Public Service; Tina Brown, Racial Justice and Debbie Waitkus, Sports. The event was emceed by Channel 12’s Tram Mai. Co-chairs were The Honorable Greg Stanton, YWCA’s first male board member, and Nicole Stanton, a former Tribute Honoree.  Over 500 guests danced to the music of The Upper East Side Big BandRegina Blakely, a nationally known poet, wrote and recited a poem celebrating the YWCA and its honorees.

The 2012 Tribute to Leadership is YWCA Maricopa County’s 19th Leadership Award event and its largest fundraising event of the year, providing essential services for low-income seniors, home-delivered meals for impoverished elderly, disabled adults and veterans, financial education to women and girls, and provides essential advocacy and awareness programs to eliminate discrimination and promote gender equity.
